In 2018 total legacy income had reached a new milestone and was worth over £3bn. In 2019 reported legacy income reached the same milestone. This year reported legacy income is £2.9bn and it is estimated that total legacy income is between £3bn and £3.1bn.

4% of total sector income comes from legacies.

There were 33,120 charitable estates in 2019, a decrease on the 37,637 reported for 2018. This has ended the general trend that the number of charitable estates were increasing. This is the second lowest number of charitable estates identified within the last decade.

Charitable estates were worth £16.5bn in 2019, £1.3bn less than the £17.8 bn recorded for 2018. This is the second year in a row where the value of charitable estates has fallen but this fall in value is exacerbated by the fall in the number of charitable estates.

18.2% of the value of charitable estates (donor wealth) went to charities.

37.5% of charitable Wills contained just one named charity and 21.8% contained 2 charities. The highest number of charities named in one will in 2019 was 57.
